Does NC Have the “Great Pumpkin?”
NC ranks 4th in the US in the production of pumpkins and our growers are looking for varieties with higher yields and sizing. A grant awarded in 2019 to NC State University (which ended in 2021), found pumpkin varieties that could produce larger and more profitable pumpkins. Researchers identified plant spacing strategies and studied fungicide applications that impacted sizing and yields. With over 4,000 acres grown in NC, there is potential for more acreage devoted to pumpkins and more markets for current and new growers that could lead to higher profits!
