Not Your Average Insect

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive pest that targets vineyards and could impact NC Christmas tree exports to other states.  The NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Plant Industry Division received a grant in 2020 to develop a response plan for detection of this insect.  SLF has caused major crop damage and become a severe nuisance in northeastern states.  Educating growers about the pest and how to properly respond when SLF is seen on a farm is critical. Response kits, activity packets for kids and other educational materials have been developed so far.  Work is still underway to raise awareness about SLF and empower growers to be diligent in identifying potential SLF habitats.
